C-Suite changes at BH Media’s North Carolina and Virginia papers

The retirement of a longtime industry veteran set off a series of changes at the top of BH Media Group’s newspaper groups in North Carolina and Virginia.

Alton Brown on May 16 became the publisher of the Winston-Salem Journal and vice president of BH Media Group’s cluster of 11 North Carolina newspapers.

He replaced Kevin Kampman, who retired after five years as publisher and executive vice president of the BH Media Group’s North Carolina cluster, and 37 years in the newspaper industry.

Brown comes to Winston-Salem after serving as a regional publisher for BH Media’s Virginia group, including its flagship The News & Advance in Lynchburg.

“When I heard that Kevin had decided to retire, I knew absolutely this would be a job I would be interested in because it represented a chance to move up in BH Media,” Brown said in a Journal article by Richard Carver. “Winston-Salem also is an area I’ve come to know over the years from having a sister-in-law and her family here.”

Brown began his newspaper career in 1986 as a quality assurance manager at Macon (Ga.) Telegraph. He has been the vice president of advertising for Gannett’s Newspaper Network of Central Ohio, executive vice president and general manager for the Akron Beacon Journal.

Brown in his previous BH Media position “demonstrated strong leadership and has achieved impressive results, both financially and journalistically,” BH Media President and CEO Terry Kroeger said in a statement.

Brown told the Journal that The News & Advance differentiated itself from media competitors by its focus on a hyperlocal focus for its coverage and advertising. He said he would bring the same approach to BH Media’s North Carolina properties.

Bob MacPherson was appointed to replace Brown as publisher of The News & Advance.

MacPherson had been based in Roanoke as regional controller for BH Media Virginia Community Newspaper Group. He started his newspaper career in 1989 as director of internal auditing for Media General. During his 25 years at the chain, he served as regional publisher, general manager and vice president of its various properties. He left Media General in 2014 as its vice president of human resources.

MacPherson joined BH Media as operations project manager in 2014.
