Eva Moore was named executive editor of the alt-weekly Free Times of Columbia, S.C., replacing Andy Shain, who was promoted to State House bureau chief at its sister paper, The Post and Courier.
Moore had been managing editor of the Free Times since last year. She first began work for the publication as a freelance writer in 2007, becoming a full-time staff writer in 2009. The next year, she was promoted to news editor.
As executive editor she will lead a newsroom of five full-time editorial staff plus a group of freelance writers and photographers.
She told her paper when her promotion was announced that she wanted the Free Times to be the “dominant source for local government news—not just a key one, but the main one.”
“Free Times is an independent voice,” Moore said. “We’re not afraid to point out bull---. But at the same time, we love Columbia, or we wouldn’t be doing this. I’m committed to maintaining that independent voice.”
Since May of last year Shain had been both Free Times editor and Post and Courier Columbia bureau chief. As the full-time bureau chief, he will lead the State House coverage, and also manage the newspaper’s recent expansion into the Midlands and Grand Strand regions of South Carolina.
