Also behind closed doors and off-the-record, this session explores the dynamics of structuring and operating a family newspaper business with a freewheeling, candid discussion on the topics most important to family owners in these times.

10:45 a.m. How one family is handling the generational transition

Sun Coast Media Group President David Dunn-Rankin will engage in a group discussion about why, at least so far, the family decided to stay in the business.  He'll look at the internal family and business pressures that surround the issue, and share how the Dunn-Rankin family is working through those pressures. This discussion will also come in the context of the pressures facing the industry as a whole. This session will also look at the internal guideposts the company is using to ensure the family stays on track with its mission and goals. There are lessons in the experience of this family's generational transition for all family owners.

2:30 p.m. Our Stories: Lessons From Member Media Organizations
In this special "Our Stories" session, hear from the new generation of family owners, who bring their perspective as third-, fourth- and fifth-generation members on the past and future of their newspaper companies. Telling their stories are:
Emily Walsh, Publisher, whose Sarasota, Fla.-based Observer Media Group has grown from the single free weekly to nine newspapers, six websites, an arts and social quarterly magazine and a paid business newspaper, with a combined reach of more than 200,000 readers each week.
Brian Jarvis, President, who grew NCWV Media in Clarksburg, W.Va. from four generations in newspapers by acquisitions and launching new products-and has diversified its revenue stream with a company that plugs old oil and gas wells and another that drills wells.
Virginia L. Cowenhoven, Associate Publisher, The Bakersfield Californian, daughter of the newspaper's matriarch and publisher, Virginia F. Moorhouse and great-great granddaughter of Alfred Harrell, who purchased The Bakersfield Californian in 1897.
