Pamplin, EO Media join with digital startup to create expanded Oregon capital bureau

Three news organizations are collaborating to expand coverage of Oregon politics and government.

The three media companies are Pamplin Media Group, publisher of the Portland Tribune and two dozen other newspapers; EO Media Group, publisher of the East Oregonian, Daily Astorian and nine other papers; and Salem Reporter, a digital-only news service that launched at the beginning of September.

Each organization is assigning a reporter to the Oregon capital bureau.

Heading the bureau is Les Zaitz, editor of the Salem Reporter and a veteran Oregon investigative reporter. He said the bureau will be “a potent watchdog over public money and government power.”

Pamplin Media Group President Mark Garber said the collaboration “will dramatically boost” his organization’s coverage of state government.

“We already were partnering with EO Media Group to provide timely and comprehensive stories about the legislature, the executive branch and state agencies,” he said. “Now, by adding Salem Reporter, we will increase the number of journalists watching the capital and also benefit enormously from Les Zaitz’s journalistic leadership.”
