Schurz Communications adds the Watertown Public Opinion to its South Dakota holdings

Schurz Communications has bought the Watertown (S.D.) Public Opinion from United Communications Corp.

Schurz also owns the American News and Farm Forum in Aberdeen, S.D.

Terms of the sale between the family-owned media companies were not disclosed.

“Putting the Aberdeen News Co. together with the Public Opinion will make both operations deeper in talent and resources,” Schurz Communications CEO Todd Schurz said in a statement. “We believe combining these two media resources will only strengthen two already solid operations.”

Public Opinion Publisher Mark Roby was named regional publisher for the Watertown and Aberdeen properties.

Roby replaces Aberdeen Publisher Cory Bollinger, who is taking on regional publisher duties for the Schurz Indiana newspaper group. Bollinger, who has been Aberdeen publisher since 2010, will continue his role as Schurz’s  vice president-publishing.

“Mark is a South Dakota native, well known for his energy, honesty and deep commitment to local journalism,” Bollinger said in the statement. “I know that the talented team in Aberdeen will continue to blossom under Mark’s leadership.”

Roby is looking forward to taking over the Aberdeen operations.

“The Aberdeen market has been exceptionally vibrant the past half decade, fast-growing and remains the third-largest market in South Dakota,” Roby said in the statement. “Both organizations will be able to learn from each other as part of the newly formed SDMG (Schurz Dakota Media Group) organization, while maintaining unique local identities as community print and digital publications.”
