Tyler Buchanan, who has been editor of The Vinton County (Ohio) Courier since 2015, was named editor of its sister paper, The Athens Messenger.
Buchanan has been with both The Messenger and The Courier since 2013 after graduating from Bowling Green State University. He became editor of The Courier while continuing to serve as a staff reporter for The Messenger.
As Messenger editor, Buchanan replaces Joe Higgins, who had been in the position 2012. Higgins, who joined the company in 20 will remain as the regional content editor with Adams Publishing Group Media of Ohio.
“We are very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to Tyler. He is a strong writer with great journalistic instincts and we feel the readers of The Messenger will benefit as he takes the helm,” said Monica Nieporte, president and publisher of APG Media of Ohio. “Joe will be taking more of a hands-on role with the editors of our regional papers to help them make the most of their resources and improve the reader experience in those markets. We feel that this restructuring is in the best interests of both readers and our advertising clients as we look for ways to continue to improve our print and online content.”
“Tyler will do a great job in continuing to help grow the newspaper. He brings excellent journalistic integrity, energy and dedication with him to this role,” Higgins said. “Tyler is very involved in the community and has done a wonderful job with The Courier. I’m excited to see the future of The Messenger with him as editor.”
